Bird Field Guides (US and Canada)
Once upon a time, if you wanted a bird field guide, you probably got the Peterson. Now, there are so many more contenders! What to choose? That depends on personal preference. While many ornithologists prefer illustrated guides because an artist can fit more detail and variation than a photo of a single species example can convey, there are upsides to photographic guides, too. All the comprehensive guides on this list also offer smaller separate western and eastern guides that are more manageable in the field. At this time I'm limiting the list to print books rather than apps, but I've noted whether guides have app versions. One adaptation is to use an app in the field and study a comprehensive guide at home. For bird field guide purposes, "birds of North America" means birds of the (usually continental) United States and Canada, even though Mexico and the Caribbean are technically in North America.
