Meet the Poets: Derek Sheffield and Kara Briggs
Meet two renowned Washington poets, Derek Sheffield and Kara Briggs, whose work is steeped in the beauty and history of the Pacific Northwest. At this event you will hear some of this art read out as these authors share about their background, their process, their inspiration.
Derek Sheffield is the 8th poet laureate of Washington State. His books include Cascadia Field Guide: Art, Ecology, Poetry, winner of a 2024 Pacific Northwest Booksellers Award. He teaches at Wenatchee Valley College and Western Colorado University, edits poetry for Terrain.org, and can often be found in the woods along the eastern slopes of the Cascade Range near Leavenworth, WA.
Kara Briggs, who is a citizen of the Sauk-Suiattle Indian Tribe and direct descendant Yakama, is a career journalist who worked across the Northwest including as a staff writer at The Oregonian and The Spokesman-Review. Now an environmental non-profit leader, she holds a Master of Fine Art in Creative Writing from the Institute of American Indian Art. She writes from her home on the Tulalip Tribes Reservation, in view of the North Cascade Mountains which is her homeland. Briggs is the author of Rivers in My Veins.
