When I find a book that doesn't have a beginning that grabs at me, I try to skim ahead to when the story "starts". It was simple to read but I never felt the hook. I would have enjoyed it alot more if it had focused on the brother and his story exclusively. Instead there is mostly exposition from the sister who has a flat personality, trained by her mom to fade into the background. This would be best for 4 or 5th graders; has more of old fashioned style to it. Its basically the movie Holes with Shia La Beouf
