I don’t read horror stories. Typically or intentionally. “The Nest” is currently one of the William Allen White nominees, which in itself holds the promise of a quality read. Little did I expect when I pulled the book from a shelf, that my reading experience would be this unforgettable. No, “haunting” is the word. From its consciously dingy book jacket and illustrations to its unassuming narrative, the story gradually takes you on a roller-coaster ride ending with an imminent climax. And in the center of it all is a boy, big brother, who has to make a choice: either join the dark forces, supposedly having good intentions, or fight the beasts to save someone precious who can’t fight for himself. Are you hooked yet? In addition to horror fans, the book will be quite a choice for dystopia lovers and adults who are curious about glimpsing into the world of a kid and discover that they can… relate to it. The age-old question, “Do we have to be perfect to be loved and cherished?” is right in front of you. How do you answer it?
