This book insists on Telling me things and not following through. I'm Told Angel is a monster, but I don't really see it. I'm Told about the cult, but for the most part it's so glossed over that the payoff of the cult's destruction feels like another page to turn, not the impactful moment it wants. Since it's a lot of Telling (as necessitated by the way the book is told, in Minnow's somehow bland point of view), it feels extraordinarily stilted and silly. There are plenty of books written from the perspective of illiterate and uneducated characters, and those books play with words and concepts in a way that this book is too afraid to do. I'm especially disappointed with this one since everyone else seems to enjoy it so much and I don't quite see why.
