The first big effort by super historian David McCullough is still a great read today. Most of America has forgotten about this disaster 120 years ago but it serves as a reminder yet today of the abuse of power and the will to survive. This killer torrent should never have happened. The Johnstown Flood was perhaps the world's first "media circus" with telegraphy sending the news around the world in hours. Wonderfully researched, including survivors interviewed in the 1960s, the story is well told and within reach of most readers.
