In a departure from her Tess Monaghan mysteries (although she makes an appearance), Lippman introduces Sandy Sanchez, a retired Baltimore detective who's working cold cases for some extra income. He's investigating the 1986 death of Julie Saxony, the mistress of a local bookmaker who suddenly disappeared in 1976. As the novel moves in time between 1959 and 2012, the reader learns the back story of Felix, his wife Bambi, his three daughters, and Julie. The author portrays five women who have been affected deeply by Felix's disappearance and how that plays out across the decades. Lippman also draws a vivid portrait of Baltimore. This is the November 2016 selection of the Willa Cather Book Club.
