The Guns at Last Light

the War in Western Europe, 1944-1945
Feb 10, 2016
With The Guns at Last Light, Rick Atkinson brings his Liberation Trilogy about the Second World War to a close (see An Army at Dawn and The Day of Battle ) This work covers from the invasion of France until the surrender of Germany. The campaign was a mixture of grand dashes across France into Germany and painful slogs in places like the bocage of Northwest France and forests like the Huertgen which chewed up men and equipment. Included was the pursuit of objectives which seem unnecessary in hindsight and leaders who spent as much time fighting among themselves as they did the enemy. In his Epilogue, Atkinson poignantly relates that the survivors of these events are now quietly taken their leave of us
