Like most people, I mainly knew of Maya Lin through her design of the Vietnam Veteran’s Memorial. When she was 19, and still in college, she won a contest to design the memorial. Her design caused huge controversy and it was a battle to get it approved and built. In this book she talks a little about what she had to go through and the personal attacks she had to endure while the controversy was swirling around her. But, what I found more interesting were her ideas of mixing art and architecture and creating monumental works that interact or embed themselves in the earth. She has a very concise and clear way of writing and expressing her ideas that draws you in and makes you contemplate how we think about monuments, the past, and the environments we surround ourselves in.
