Kya's spirit is the compelling center of this story. Born into the most terrible imaginable circumstances and abandoned by her family, she grows, learns, and connects to nature through several key people. Imagine "Girl of the Limberlost" for contemporary readers ... with a touch of "Girl with the Dragon Tattoo". Owens is an experienced nature writer, and that is her strongest suit -- but I can only comment that if this is her first novel (as the blurb suggests), then... wow! Read it slow and enjoy Owens' talent - this one is about the settings and characters with a good mystery at the core.
