Fellowes has mangled a beautiful Trollope novel. Fellowes has rendered the subtle plot and psychological touches that are typically Trollopian -- and easily rendered onscreen even in 3 hours, as other Trollope-based productions such as those of the Pallisers or The Warden -- show, and either distorted them or changed them outright. The crass and melodramatic moments in this production are those contrived by a condescending Fellowes, not written by Trollope. That said, I have given this a star and a half because I found it interesting to watch. Hollander does a good job of inhabiting the character of Doctor Thorne. Beware, though, if you love the Trollope novel you may hate this.
