Such a sorrowful disappointment. The premise is fantastic, but the execution...guh. It begins at an agonizingly creaking pace, rockets up to 75mph for a while, and then clunks back down to doddering, should-put-the-hazards-on, speed with dropped plot points littering the road behind it. The first half is fine, once you get twenty pages in. MC is confused, scared, trying out her new role while being uninformed and causing trouble--the conflict is there and it is good...until Stern rebels and the pointless romance starts up (seriously, pages of kiss analysis await you). The villain was anticlimactic, and the resolution was lazy. I've read too much good fantasy to be impressed by this meager offering.
