Once a favourite of mine, I am starting to actively dislike Elinor Lipman's books. Far from being modern in her approach to romance, I find her curiously 1950's-ish. Her protagonists never actually have any friends or outside interests and seem strangely isolated from all but family, with whom they have ambivalent relationships, and that all-important significant other, from whom they always seem emotionally detached. As long as one gets the ring, that is all that's important - it's impossible to believe in the relationship. After 10 books, it's gotten tiresome.
