The Last Secret of the Temple --- by Paul Sussman. The first Sussman novel I read, The Labyrinth of Osiris, was enough to make me go on and find what else Sussman had written. Next I found The Secret of the Temple. This is a book you don’t so much read as devour. The protagonists one meets in Labyrinth are here again: Yusuf Khalifa the Egyptian cop from Luxor and Arieh Ben-Roi, the sodden Israel cop. Initially antagonistic, by the time they solve their case(s) they have become, improbably, the best of friends. Ingredients: a bunch of murders; a pre-requisite dash of Nazis; stash of WW II loot; Zionist extremists; a double-crossing Palestinian journalist; suicide bombers and, the lost Menorah of the Israelites. Read like nobodies’’ business. Don’t stop till all gone. L’cheim.
