The murder of a prominent railway magnate in a brothel near Hester's home for ill and injured street women causes multiple problems when the police are unable to solve the case. Constables are posted on every street corner in the red light district, and business slows. The trickle of women who do come to Hester's shelter, however, tend to be more severely injured. Meanwhile, an attractive, mysterious woman comes to Monk as a client. She's engaged to a man in the railway business, but has overheard things that make her fear that her fiance is involved in fraud. Much as she loves the man, she wants to be sure he's on the up and up before she puts her life in his hands. Monk takes the case, and as often happens in this series, his case and Hester's ultimately converge, in a most astounding way.
