Fascinating, written in 1936, with the development of psychiatry and initial understandings of criminal behavior.
Be sure to look up what an ‘alienist’ is!
Even so, there seems to me that there is a lot in this book about that people think they ‘know’ about the behavior of criminals - for example, a ‘deep understanding’ of various categories of criminals. Some criminals do this; other criminals do that. They knew that much about categories so early on, with loads of data on many serial killers...?!? I'm thinking not.
There’s even a bit about the effect of war ‘on the mind.’ There still needs to be much more attention to this as a topic of mental health and lasting misery..
