Charles Willeford has created a magnificent battered anti-hero, Miami police detective Hoke Moseley. The plot is character driven. Sergeant Moseley's social commentary (circa 1985) is hilarious. Unfortunately, it appears that no current author can write a crime novel like Charles Willeford. IMHO, I would rate "New Hope for the Dead" at 5.0 stars.
