THE HUNCHBACK OF NOTRE DAME has somehow got a bad reputation over the years as a mediocre Walt Disney film, but to be honest, I can't understand why. It is a fantastic film with great writing and story development. Perhaps it is its tone, as it is a little more harsh (and so more suitable for older children, eight or nine years at least) and it is set in a historical setting (like Mulan, Pocahontas, etc.) that is pretty serious in its aesthetic (think French cathedrals) and that might not appeal to the eye as much as the rainbows and sunshine of other Disney films. However, it is a fantastic film, and takes an incredible risk by taking a stance on religious righteousness and the corruption of certain officials. It even says something about the problem with men of the cloth and celibacy (although only older audiences will notice it, so not to worry, it will most definitely fly over little children's heads). It is more serious, though, and I think that might be the only alleged "fault" one can find in what is truly a cinematic gem.
