Honouring a "keystone species", this book is brimming with affection, ecological facts, Canadian history, biology, indigenous people's stories and more. Backhouse is a very good writer, her creative non-fiction flows with evocative language and picturesque vocabulary and is a pleasure to read. Each chapter stands on it's own. As well, I think it is a great choice for a bed time read-aloud. Older elementary age children would benefit and enjoy it!
