This isn’t the typical self help book that promises you a quick fix to all your problems. Reading this book helped me understand my brain, how it works, why I feel certain emotions and how to increase the emotions I want ( the upward spiral) while decreasing the things that put me in that negative place ( the downward spiral). I liked how it’s more science and neuroscience based than motivational based. There are real actions that you can take every day to increase your healing. I started by going outside, soaking in the sun, bought a bike and also focusing on the fact that depression isn’t a permanent disease for me but just a feeling caused by my hormonal imbalances. I took a lot of birth control for health reasons, plus I had iron deficiency anemia so I was depressed for a reason but still felt ashamed for my weaknesses that I saw as laziness but now I’m taking it easy and I’m reading the book a second time to practice the upward spiral steps.

I loved this because it gives the science behind the advice self-help books always give. No touchy-feely stuff, just studies of what affects mood in a positive way, with the brain neurology explained. The author’s idea is that by combining lots of ways to improve your mood slightly, you can get yourself on an upward spiral out of depression. Some things are obvious, like exercise and social contact, but there are also improvements to be made by spending time in the sun, demanding hugs, and playing music. Very very helpful.

Excellent resource for those with depression - may be especially helpful for those who have a more logical or scientifically curious mind: he explains different physical parts and different system tendencies with the brain, and how to proactively influence them through various means to beat depression. Very accessible too as he also includes his own experiences with depression and a fun bit of humor throughout.

Great easy-to-read book, not just for people with depression, but for anyone interested in maintaining good mental health or for those supporting people going through tough times. Backed up by lots of intriguing research.
