I bought this book after borrowing it two years ago. I initially just looked at the beautiful, atmospheric pastel paintings. I am now reading all the artist’s text opposite each painting. McKinley describes what brought him to paint each scene; his inspiration and then his method to obtain his trademark soft, misty paintings. Well worth a read for aspiring pastel artists. Of course, art is so personal, it is possible that McKinley’s particular choices of colour or subject matter won’t appeal to everyone, but that’s what makes art personal!
