William Shirer's panoramic and sardonic classic. Grover Gardner is like a dry, droll grandfather, telling a bedtime story to the 21st century. You may start sleeping with the lights on.

Well written, well researched. The author was an American journalist stationed in Europe in the 30's and 40's so he has first hand knowledge of all the German players and has an engaging narrative style. Really, really long but well worth it.

Well told. Europe in the first half of the 20th century, as described by an intimate observer of the bizarre events in Germany. In story form, with well-informed independent analysis. An enlightening view of the various political and rhetorical trickery Hitler used to gain power, and then use his ill-gotten power to initiate WW II. The audio reading is excellent, and includes critical-to-the-story footnote references. At 46 audio CD's, a long listen. The sequence of story segments are mostly independent, so the listener can make their way through this tome at whatever pace they like without loss of continuity. Highly recommended.
