I’ll admit it, I’m pretty much a sucker for most things mermaid. So I sort of went into “shut up and take my money” mode when I initially bought this book on my Kindle. Gargantuan mistake.

First of all, how did the author let so many horrible puns get past? Alright, on occasion, I can let a few pass. But they were so frequent and scattered far too liberally throughout the book, and were sometimes used in place of serious terms. Exhibit A: the merpeople call their money “currensea”.
CurrenSEA. You heard me right. This is honestly just blasphemy. To keep all who are reading this relatively sane, I won’t share any more of the heinous puns.

Second, the main characters were incredibly annoying. Serafina was this annoying, overly naive and whiny damsel in distress in disguise as a “strong heroine”. Urgh. Neela was even worse; for lack of better words, she’s basically a complete bimbo. A bimbo with an almost disturbing addiction to odd candies. Ling, Ava, Becca, and Astrid were just filler, like the author just tossed them in at the last minute so that there would be six chosen ones.

In other words, please just don’t read this book. Why have all the mermaid books I’ve read in recent years turned out to be a waste of time?

This book was amazing! At the beginning I didn't understand, but it excelled quickly with drama and romance.I loved it!It had me on edge....but I need to say....IT LEFT ON A CLIFFHANGER!I was so mad,so the next day I went directly to the library to get all the other books in the series. So worth it,I read it at nights, and felt so connected to the amazing characters. They all had such different personalities. Also let me just say the conflicts in these stories are so amazing!RECOMMEND 100%

Deep Blue, though being a rather enjoyable book, was incredibly easy to predict. If you don't know what I'm talking about, then think about how many times you've heard this before: a reluctant heir to the throne, feeling pressured by her whole kingdom to be perfect. She wants to run away, but there is a sense of responsibility binding her to the castle that she hates. Then, she gets her chance as disaster strikes.
It was rather cheesy, but other than that a fairly simple to understand and classic adventure story involving strong, empowered female characters fighting to save the world.

I couldn't get into it. Fifty pages in and the story is still focused on the girl's relationships. It might be of interest to teenage girls, but not me.

This book was very magical and mythological. This is the first book in the WaterFire Saga series. In this book, the characters changed a lot. The main character, Serafina, started off as a know-it-all perfect princess who always listened to her mother. She was going to be the next ruler of Miromara and she had no complaints. Suddenly, everything changed in a heartbeat. On the day of Serafina's Dokimi(a festival where the next ruler of Miromara is declared capable of the throne), Serafina's mother, Queen Isabella got shot with a poisonous arrow. In a moment, Sera's life changed forever. With all the screaming and shouting, Serafina got away with the help of her best friend Neela. My favourite part in the book is when Neela is sewing new clothes for everyone as a new disguise. That's when Neela gets a different feeling that I can perfectly connect to. She thinks about her journey and everything they have been through. She thinks about who she was and who she is. Although this was a very small part, it really helped me as a reader think about how a situation can change so fast. This book also has a lot of new characters that are introduced throughout the story. This book is very suspenseful and interesting. The ending made me feel both mad and happy at the same time because it ended as a cliff hanger. The good thing is that I knew that there will be another book coming out soon. This book to read was really fun to read and I would recommend it. Rating- 5/5

Oddly enough, I read the second book before this one so I already knew a lot of what was happening before I even opened it. I probably should not have done that. In doing so, I found a lot of the story to be less dramatic than it should have been. But for a normal reader, I would suggest an age of ten to twelve to enjoy the book and for reading level. For me, I should have read this a long time ago but I guess late is better than never. At least now I can move onto book three without too much confusion. The whole mermaid plot is actually very interesting when you consider how much imagination must have gone into creating the themes. Each of the characters have their own traits and flaws that make them very real and relatable. 4.5/5 stars.

Has some of the "fun", punny, and humorous things you see with Percy Jackson or Harry Potter...money is called currensea, but it falls flat. There are too many new made-up or unusual terms (ex. permutavi, a peace treaty), it pulls the reader out of the story...there is a 28 page glossary...in a fiction book! I think this book would be fine for younger readers...up to middle school, but it doesn't have the same spark that makes Harry Potter appeal to all ages.

'Magic depended on so many things-the depth of one's gift, experience, dedication, the position of the moon, the rhythm of the tides, the proximity of the whales. it didn't settle until one was fully grown; Serafina knew that. But she needed it know, and she prayed to the gods that it would be."
