Opinion

From Library Staff

A gritty, Victorian-era medical drama. Perched on the bleeding edge of early 1900s surgical technology, The Knickerbocker hospital is the perfect playground for arrogant, brilliant surgeon Dr. Thackery and a host of other fascinating, flawed characters. Not for the squeamish. Suggested by Emily Z.

While "The Knick" (the name of a hospital) was well-received, it didn't really find an audience. Maybe because it was on Cinemax, best known as a purveyor of soft porn. Set in turn of the century New York City, it's a doctor show, but very different than the usual ones on TV. Clive Owen stars as a brilliant, but arrogant and drug addicted surgeon struggling to bring medicine and surgery into the modern age. Andre Holland (recently seen in "Moonlight") is a black doctor who faces racism, Juliet Rylance plays a crusading public health advocate who is trapped by her wealthy circumstances, and Eve "Bono's my Dad" Hewson is a young, Southern nurse who falls for Owen. The acting is excellent and the show tackles big issues like race, poverty, class, public health, abortion, and drug addiction. The show looks great and all the episodes were directed by Steven Soderberg ("Ocean's Eleven," "Traffic"). It should be noted that the surgery scenes are very graphic and you would be best to not eat whilst watching. Contrary to another comment, I did not find this lugubrious at all! It will make you grateful for modern medicine and health care. Way better than "Gray's Anatomy."

Loved this! It is gruesome, informative, and addicting. So glad to see Clive Owen in a role like this. Also...a lot of these characters and stories are true. Well, loosely true, that is.

Too unbelievable and too much gratuitous blood! Costumes of the 1900s were good. Couldn't watch more than 1 1/2 episodes then gave up as it didn't improve. Tried too hard to be dramatic.
