Wonderful collection of stories about WWII in Hastings, compete with the political intrigue associated with the military and domestic forces, often at odds, despite the general overall war effort against Germany during the early 1940's.

When the world is at war and murder is taking place on a massive scale, what is one to make of individual crimes? What constitutes illegality? Is there a difference between crime and political murder? Those questions are posed, and not always answered, in this WWII whodunit series. Superimposing fictional characters and storylines into actual, historical incidents (in a more integrated way than standard “historical fiction”) is the masterstroke of this series, and the acting and period props all look authentic. Each episode has a “truth behind…” in the special features, explaining the actual event on which the story was based. Entertaining, informative, and thought-provoking, this is much better fare than that other (and overly lurid) BBC detective series by the same writer, “Midsommer Murders”. Highly recommended.

Wow! A TV series we totally enjoyed.
The stories, complicated and unpredictable, were all interwoven, and in the end - but not until the end - always all wrapped up and the case(s) solved - usually in the way you least expected it, but making total sense. The actor playing Detective Foyle does an amazing job. Very often he didn't say a word, but we could tell what he was thinking just from his expressions. Other times he delivered gut-punching lines ("I've figured out what you did and how you did it") with a perfectly straight face.
For us it was eye-opening, learning about WWII from the English point of view. There were many thought-provoking topics as various characters consider what would be the best course of action, and experience character-building events in their lives. I love learning something while being entertained.
Other reviews mentioned lack of captions; we watch everything with captions (although the actors in this series speak clearly enough for us to understand them better than most with an accent different from our own), and I believe there are now captions on all discs in every season of this series.

This was an interesting series, but for us was seriously hindered as it did not have subtitles. Most but not all Acorn productions have the subtitles. Otherwise, very interesting premise for homicides in World War II.

Totally enjoyable series! Good acting, interesting story line, and a supporting cast that adds much to each episode. It is interesting to follow the lives of the regular cast of characters as the war unfolds. Michael Kitchen is a wonderful actor.

you don't need to be a history buff to enjoy this detective series, but if you are it will be that much more enjoyable. a real eye opener of how the British lived during the war--great acting and scenery. watching creator/writer Horowitz's interview is a must as his enthusiasm for his show is remarkable---obviously a work of love for him

Great series. you get to experience WWII in England from a policemen's point of view. Michael Kitchen, Foyle, is so cool, intelligent, and British He's a delight to watch. As usual the characters are great, the story unwinds slowly. But, if you're a fan of the Brits story telling, you'll like Foyle.
