Use Week before Thanksgiving capstone lesson to families, community, mushroom, trees, apple tree Annie, the entire foundation unit culminates with this book. The web of life mentioned in the book ties in nicely with spider theme used in following week for first theme of clothing unit (the spider weaves /clothing is woven). I used clam as the theme for this week and we had clam chowder for cooking activity and tidal pool items in science center. After Thanksgiving, we switched science area to add spider items (books and need to purchase rubber spiders/bugs) then added paperwhite bulbs in 4 oz canning jars to link growth and clothing.
This semi-historical transcription of a Native American’s impassioned injunction to preserve the land is accompanied by some of the most gorgeous illustrations I’ve ever seen. Men, women, children, horses, eagles, deer and wolves seem to step, gallop, soar and stalk from the page. It’s one of the most moving entreaties a child will ever read about preserving nature. You want to cry at what has been lost from America—and hold your breath in the hope that it might be regained.
