At 22, Kate Mulgrew gave birth to a daughter. Having already signed the adoption papers, she was allowed only a fleeting glimpse of her child. Three days later, she returned to work as the star of a popular soap opera. Twenty years later, still haunted by the choice she had made, Kate went in search of the daughter she had given away. Raised in a large, eccentric Irish family, Mulgrew is mischievous, brave, wise, and a born storyteller.

When a book stays with you for days after reading it, it can only rate a 5 star rating. Totally engrossing, memorable, at turns heartwarming and sad. This is a life fully lived. Listening to Kate Mulgrew is like being transported into a novel or play and having it spun out before you bit by bit. She and I are of an age and her stories ring true of that time and of those places when the world was our oyster and she lived it to the fullest. Yes there was heartbreak, but there were also highs. It took her a while to learn who she was and how to navigate her world rather than skim across it, but she did. She will always be an actress, as that is what she was born to do. Janeway to many of us, and now Red to others but she will also be daughter, sister, wife and mother to those most important to her. I hope she keeps on writing. I loved hearing her read her book as it was more performance than recitation with her darn sexy voice and it carried me away as a very good book should. Thank you for sharing yourself with us.

Another "celebrity" memoir I wish I hand't read. A talented actress; a selfish human being. She has that "of course, everyone knows who I am" attitude, so prevalent in Hollywood. Too bad as she is a unique personality. Don't bother reading. Just "google" her and you'll get my drift.

I absolutely loved Kate Mulgrew in Star Trek Voyager and I love her even more after reading her biography. She is such a courageous woman and role model. Her story was very interesting, especially with regards to her family life--there is quite a heartwarming surprise near the end! She also writes with a lot of personality; I felt as if she were reading the story to me.

I have only seen Mulgrew in Orange is the New Black so I kept expecting to hear a Russian accent and every now and then I think I did! She lead quite an interesting life and I enjoyed hearing about it.

This was a one sit read and the pages flew by. I've had the benefit of listening to Kate Mulgrew read from this book so I very easily could hear her reading the book as I more or less devoured the thing. Even if you have never heard her speak or read before the prose has a particular poetry and drama to it that just makes it feel like it's being read to you instead of you just sitting there and reading it.

The Mulgrew family is an interesting and large one. Joan Mulgrew (Kate's mother) being a particular star in the whole thing. Of course Kate herself goes on to lead a dramatic life herself. My main experience with her work is as Captain Kathryn Janeway on Star Trek: Voyager so a look at some other work she has done, mostly in theatre, was really interesting. Star Trek is only addressed in the very end of the book so if you're not into Star Trek, don't worry. If you are into biographies about strong women overcoming obstacles and flourishing in spite of them - Mulgrew has had a fair amount of tragedy and pain in her life - then this is the book for you.
