Beautiful and stark, the two half-hour pieces on this disc emerge from, create, contain, and return to silence. Both pieces contain fractured Baroque gestures, like Bach viewed through a kaleidoscope. The first piece uses fantastical orchestration including the insides of the piano. The “song cycle” (Hommage), an opera from the edge of space, uses long solo passages and ensemble playing that is often microtonal (the horn is played “naturally”, that is, without the valves, for much of the piece, putting it at odds with the tuning of the other instruments). Both feature long “silences” that are not actually silent – there are instruments playing in there, almost beyond the edge of hearing. Both pieces are great for active listening when all other music is too energetic and too bland at the same time, and the transition from the orchestral to the chamber work is not jarring (as is too often the case in classical compilations). Highly recommended.
