A fine book. Julia was impressively naïve, especially since the book was narrated from her perspective and you might expect there to be at least an acknowledgement of that aforementioned attribute!

Gloria Whelan's writing style was passable and at times elegant, but by no means deep--And her characterization is, however, worthy of a Middle-Eastern story set in the early 1900s.

The denouément was hurried... What with the convenient letter and Julia's realizations--seemingly abrupt. But, that is how it appeared to me! I did never guess the ending...
