What a writer. Very much worth rereading. In fact, I just read about a book titled Beyond Boundaries: Rereading John Steinbeck, edited by Susan Shillinglaw and Kevin Hearle. What a picture of life right after World War II in what was then a little known part of the world.

I admire Steinbeck’s ability to put together words in such a manner as to draw your attention to their use and what those words bring together in your imagination. I was returning home from a trip, and as I was driving along, this story, as well as Steinbeck’s wordsmithing made for an enjoyable and delightful story.

A delightful story about a manager of characters all inter-connected by the cannery business. The opening of the book sets the tone and insight into the characters. What a lot of people would judge as the seedier side of life, these individuals all come together to portray life, or better yet, to reveal their lives to be so much as middle class, everyday public citizen. An interesting portrayal of life, its ups and downs, pursuits, achievements, relationships.

Numerous, revealing, and certainly amusing. I cannot recommend this book enough. You will be delightd as well as touched, both by the writing and most certainly the story and characters. Very enjoyable.

Cannery Row gives you glimpses of Steinbeck's wonderful scenes, memorable characters, breathtaking settings, humor and heartbreak, but they're just glimpses, and they're all just a bit out of focus

This book is a treasure! It's absolutely hilarious, characters are loveable, dialogues are to die for and English... Or dear what an amazing knowledge and masterful use of English language. A very well deserved Nobel prize in literature by such an amazing talent as Mr. Steinbeck.

I've been waiting for this for months. Why is it taking so long to process?

Great novel with wonderful characters that lived on Cannery Row in the 1930's. John Steinbeck was writing about real people he knew in Monterey at the time. The novel was so popular it was later made into a movie with Nick Nolte and then a stage play. I don't understand the one star rating at the top of the page. All the comments are very favorable with many five stars. How did "Cannery Row" get a one star rating? John Steinbeck is recognized as one of our countries most outstanding writers. His work should be openly shown to be lacking in order to receive a one star rating. KCLS should look into why this is happening. It also occurred on "Of Mice and Men" both the book and the 1939 movie of the same name. KCLS stocks 40 copies of "Cannery Row" and list it as a classic. How then do we get to a one star rating?

“The things we admire in men, kindness and generosity, openness, honesty, understanding and feeling are the concomiants of failure in our system. And those traits we detest, sharpness, greed, acquisitiveness, meanness, egotism and self-interest are the traits of success. And while men admire the quality of the first they love the produce of the second"
