The bestselling author of Maine brings us a sparkling tale of friendship and a fascinating portrait of the first generation of women who have all the opportunities in the world, but no clear idea about what to choose.

Assigned to the same dorm their first year at Smith College, Celia, Bree, Sally, and April couldn't have less in common. Celia, a lapsed Catholic, arrives with a bottle of vodka in her suitcase; beautiful Bree pines for the fianc#65533; she left behind in Savannah; Sally, preppy and obsessively neat, is reeling from the loss of her mother; and April, a radical, redheaded feminist wearing a "Riot: Don't Diet" T-shirt, wants a room transfer immediately. Written with radiant style and a wicked sense of humor, Commencement follows these unlikely friends through college and the years beyond, brilliantly capturing the complicated landscape facing young women today.

At first, I thought this would be another chick-lit book, an easy sumer read. That is not the case. The novel follows 4 Smith College students, from their first day at college, through graduaion, and into their adult lives. At times, I found the movement between character stories to be a little confusing, but the author tackles some pretty heavy concepts in these women's stories.

Great book - the story of 4 college friends who spend their time figuring out who they are while dealing with current issues of feminism. I loved how each chapter was written from the point of view of a different one of the women.

Fantastic read - this novel follows the story of 4 young women and their relationships through very 'formative' years of their lives. Filled with fantastic feminist sentiments, it is a wonderful 'today' read.
