A chilling and vividly rendered ghost story set in post-war Britain, by the bestselling and award-winning author of The night watch and Fingersmith. The little stranger follows the strange adventures of Dr. Faraday, the son of a maid who has built a life of quiet respectability as a country doctor. One dusty post-war summer in his home of rural Warwickshire, he is called to a patient at Hundreds Hall.

Perfection. Beautifully written and beautifully read. Very evocative, engrossing, absorbing, poignant. Wistful, along the lines of "The Remains of the Day". I'm a big fan of Sarah Waters' earlier novels and was unsure what to expect without the lesbian element in this story but it was still brilliant and well-realised. Simon Vance is also rapidly becoming one of my favourite audio artists.

There's way too much unnecessary detail and way too much repetition. One waits for the story to go somewhere, and this reader gave up in utter boredom.

The narrator is excellent - when he does a female voice, it's very convincing, not annoying. The story is slow but engrossing. I listened in my car and almost couldn't wait to drive somewhere so I could get back to the story.
