This was a weird book. I've never read this author before so I wasn't sure where she was going... what to believe and what not to. So the big reveal at the end was maddening. If that first chapter had been laurel retelling her story to someone, that would have been one thing. But it was narrated.

This book is a good read all the way through, and then what an ending. I keep remembering and rethinking this book, long after I read it.

The ending is disappointing, I would almost call it a cop out ending. There were too many characters in the audio book even though some of it makes sense in by the end, there were too many loose ends with unanswered questions or answers that didn't make sense even at the end. It almost felt unfinished and the truth is upsetting.
I've not read a Chris Bohjalian book previously, so I was not prepared to be yo-yo-ed by the book, it would draw me in but then I would get bored. If it wasn't a audio book, I would have given up early on.
