About 15 year old Kenna who is caught by her friend (and fellow cutter) cutting her arms in the school bathroom. Kenna is locked up for 72 hours in the mental ward with other teens who are also self-harming. They go to group therapy together, and the story follows Kenna as she considers why she cuts (part of it is peer pressure as she and her friends belong to the ‘Sisters of the Cut Glass’ and all cut themselves), an absentee father, a step-father, and a perfect younger sister from her mom’s second marriage. The story is written in a prose-like fashion with the words cascading over the page and very little descriptive narration, but a lot of dialogue and Kenna’s thoughts – it was very easy to read and I loved it until the end when it wraps up a little too neatly with Kenna going back home and feeling optimistic about her future.

Disturbing and powerful look at the issue of self-harm in high school. Kenna tells her story from a psych ward where she is involuntarily committed after being caught cutting in the school bathroom. Author draws from direct family experience, and the result is sickeningly believable.
