"Nell Zink's debut novel follows a downwardly mobile secretary from Philadelphia who marries an ambitious soon-to-be-expat pharmaceutical researcher in hopes that she will never work again. They end up in Germany, where it turns out that her new husband is tougher, sneakier, more sincere, more contradictory, and smarter than she is; she'd naturally thought it was impossible. Life becomes complicated with affairs, birding, and eco-terrorism. Bad things happen, yet they stagger through, clinging to each other from a safe distance. Eventually our heroine commences building a life of her own, in imitation of her husband, one soggy brick at a time."--Publisher's website

Perhaps all it takes for Jonathan Franzen to recommend a book is that include something about birds. I did not find that this novel had any redeeming qualities - why would anyone be interested in these self-absorbed characters? The humour is only juvenile.

This is all right, not great, sort of like Fear of Flying with a lighter tone. I've never felt the desire to read Fear of Flying a second time. I was disappointed by this book, Zink's first, because I had been very much impressed by an excerpt from her second book. I await that one.

Off beat character and fresh writing style. Stick with it because the message at the end of the book is the best. Should be required reading for all young women.
