Henry Darger is the darling of the Outsider Art movement. Some of his illustrations command prices of $750,000. And all of this from a man who rarely left his room.

Directed by Jessica Yu in 2004, this 82-minute documentary depistc the life and works of Henry Darger (1892–1973) who died with his works unknown by the world.
An obscure janitor during his life, Darger became known for the posthumous discovery of his elaborate 15,145-page fantasy manuscript entitled "The Story of the Vivian Girls"---an epic illustrating story with several hundred watercolor paintings and other drawings.
Amazing and Absorbing and exquite!

I loved this movie. It's fascinating, and super-well-done!

This is one of my favourite documentaries of all time. Not only is Henry Darger fascinating as a person and an outlier artist, the film makers came up with some interesting ideas how to portray his life. It's not obvious to make a movie about someone who never talked to anyone and who left behind only one photo of himself plus a 13,000 page novel he wrote and illustrated himself. Highly recommended if you like weird people and unusual lives.

As much as I hate to say this, I found it hard to stay awake during this film. Now, my drowsiness is obviously not the fault of the film, but I wasn't revived by the film either. While the story of Henry Darger is interesting, I found the film to languish near what seemed to be the surface of it. Perhaps there could have been more focus on the art itself. Several of the works were not shown in their entirety except as DVD extras. For those not interested in the process of artistic expression or the socialization of artists, I do not recommend this film.
