At a glance, Voyager looks like just another Star Trek series with a ship flying through space and meeting aliens and dealing with daily crises. Technically, that's still the case, but now there is a new layer of impending doom that heightens the sense of urgency and drama. As a result, Star Trek Voyager immediately earns credit as a distinct adventure and makes for great drama, even if it owes a bit to Lost in Space.
Horrible TV soundtrack. I have given this only 1/2 star because Captain Janeway's voice is digitally altered, actually deliberately distorted, to make it sound "more masculine". To my sensitive ears, her altered voice is grossly ugly and obnoxious. She doesn't command. She overacts and barks orders in an ugly whine. Furthermore, there is far too much close miking for scenes where a boom mike would have been far superior sound-wise. In order to be realistic, one must hear realistic room acoustics, so a boom is necessary to capture them. Acoustically, this is by far the worst Star Trek series ever produced.
