Excellent in every way. Best anti-war movie ever.

Very well made WW2 tv mini-series from the German perspective. The atrocities of war make some parts of the series very difficult to watch.

I'm a "war baby" so I grew up with WW2 as back story. This is a riveting, well-written and well-acted story of 5 friends on the eve of the war. This is the story of what happened to each of them. Highly recommend.

You basically can't find a KCLS patron that didn't praise "Generation War". I found both DVD's riveting and brilliantly written. Every minute was gripping. You really become involved with the characters and this true story. I was privileged to see it!

The second half is very intensive. Background music is also good.

Excellent movie - an interesting look at the lives of various friends and how their lives were changes by the war.

This is a 279-minute German docu-drama directed by Philipp Kadelbach.
It was originally aired in Germany and Austria in 2013 as television miniseries.
It is a unique historical drama in the sense that there are no images of death camps or bodies in mass graves, and that none of the protagonists seem to have completely internilized the lessons that would have been imparted to them by the Hitler Youth or the League of German Girls.
Hitler appears in the film only as a photograph on a wall or a book cover, and once as a voice on the radio.
While the inhumane crimes committed against Jews and Jewish sympathizers on the Eastern Front and in Berlin are shown in relative detail and without restraint, they are attributed to the most monstrous of higher ranking German offcers or to Ukranian auxillary police and Polish partisans.
Even the Americans take a share of the blame when they are called to take in the end for turning a blind eye to Nazi war criminals in order to expedite post-war reconstruction.

If you have not watched Generation War, you should. It gives a whole different perspective of the war from the German POV. Not only that, the story of 5 friends and their journeys throughout the war was intense and heartbreaking. I don't agree with some people who say this mini series sympathizes with the Germans. I felt it portrayed the Germans POV of the war, and shows that not all Germans were harsh and cold blooded (Which I think is what American WW2 films portray the Germans as). Its the same with American WW2 films…not all Americans were nice and humane during the war.

Yes, its war, and this mini series portrayed the change in each character very nicely. I loved seeing the drastic change in the German soldiers morale, when they realize that the German army was not invincible like they had first believed.

The acting was marvelous, and the nicely done cinematography added to the emotion of each scene. I highly recommend watching Generation war even if you aren't a war movie/ WW2 buff.
