Post office manager Philippe longs for a transfer to the sunny, sophisticated south of France. But when his attempt to cheat his way into a transfer backfires, he is sent instead to Nord-Pas de Calais. This northern province is known for its chilly dampness, its drunken, unemployable population, its terrible food and an impenetrable dialect known as Ch'timi. But Philippe soon learns to love these people so much that he must devise a strategy, with the help of the natives, to keep his left-behind wife from discovering his secret.

A feel-good movie that actually made me feel good! It has an old-fashioned feel to it - no bad guys, no firearms, no special effects - and the basic story is quite silly. There is a family in southern France required to move north for a job near the border with Belgium, which they believe to be a horrible place, with dreadful weather and peopled with demented savages living in the coal mines and speaking a different language. The man of the family decides nobly to spare his family and ventures alone to this cursed land. Fun ensues. Not Citizen Kane but definitely worth watching on a rainy afternoon.

I enjoyed this but kept wishing I did not have to rely on the subtitles; I think it would have been much funnier for a francophone, especially from France.
A thematic Canadian comparator might be French Immersion, which I thought was hilarious, but which might make no sense at all to an American.

Phillipe is a timid manager with the Post Office who dreams of getting a choice posting on the Cote d’Azur. Somehow he manages to screw up his one big chance and instead finds himself assigned to a rustic village in the far north much to the chagrin of his somewhat spoiled wife. Life in Pas de Calais is quite different from the sunny climes of the south. The weather is temperamental for one thing and the local yokels speak a horrible patois that is barely understandable. Since he has to live in this French version of Siberia for a minimum of 2 years he soon realizes he has to adapt or go crazy. This is a very funny, warmhearted comedy which gets much of its humour from Phillipe’s ongoing culture clash with a host of colourful locals. Even if you are not familiar with the in-jokes surrounding southern France’s view of its northern counterpart the laughs still come fast and easy....they even survive subtitling for the most part. Well worth seeing!

Better have google maps ready to look up all the little French towns they mention throughout the movie.

What a clever comedy. If you understand French you'll laugh yourself crazy at the strangely spoken CH'TIS sounds. What is remarkable is that with the clever English subtitles you'll laugh juscht as chrazily!

A funny and touching movie about a northern French town and its kooky but endearing inhabitants.
