The largest masonry dome on earth, Florence's cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore, is a masterpiece of ingenuity and a source of mystery. Historians and engineers have long debated how its architect, kept the dome perfectly aligned and symmetrical as the sides rose and converged toward the center. To test the latest theories, a team of U.S. bricklayers will help build an experimental, mini-Duomo, using period tools and techniques.

I thought the show was very interesting. I had read Brunelleschi's Dome for book club. I didn't even know this magnificent dome existed before that. I am not well enough educated to follow the written descriptions in the book. It all made sense to me as I could see it in this PBS production.

Perhaps best for someone with no previous knowledge about the subject, this documentary nonetheless provides interest as it looks at an architectural engima in Florence and the man who designed it.

I'm surprised at NOVA. There isn't anything new here about the dome though some guy is building a scale model nearby which apparently wasn't documented from the beginning. The herringbone brickwork is really old news.
