The characters' lives are linked to each other by acts of generosity or cruelty. A daughter in early 20th century Chicago; a hobo during the Great Depression; an office girl in 1950s Manhattan; the young man reveling in 1960s San Francisco, then later tends to dying friends as the AIDS pandemic hits; as the new century opens, a man who has lost his way finds a measure of peace in a photograph he discovers in an old box-an image of pure and simple joy that unites the themes of this work.

From Library Staff

Here's an idea that absolutely should not work: a novel of the 20th century in verse. The late, brilliant David Rakoff makes it sing. Suggested by Jennifer K.

David Rakoff's final book before dying of cancer at the age of 47 is a original and refreshing series of interconnected stories chronicling live, love and relationships throughout the 20th century. In addition to David's poignant, acerbic, and witty storytelling skills, he has written the entire novel in verse, and included some beautiful illustrations by Seth. It's a gorgeous design for a sweetly powerful novel by a talented writer who left us far too early.
