A heartfelt movie

Froster Dec 15, 2014

Eytan Fox gives us a sequel to his earlier “Yossi and Jagger”, and the passage of time has not ripened the earlier insights, but curdled them. The character of Yossi, the cute, closeted commanding officer of the tragic pair is now a fatter, sadder, closeted cardiologist. He is understandably depressed, given his memories, his predilection for anonymous hook-ups with gorgeous egotists, and his being, well, still in the closet. What is not quite understandable are some of his actions (the visit to his dead lovers’ parents?), and the attraction to him of a young Israeli soldier with the body of a Kouros. The only "improvement" upon the earlier film is that this one includes some tasteful nudity, including that of the former hottie Lior Ashkenazi (can one say, "too little, too late"?) Fox, unfortunately, has developed a habit of setting characters in motion who perform according to his schematic plotting, rather than realistic motivations. The one exception has been “Yossi and Jagger”. “Yossi” is approximately half as good.

In the Israel that this movie occupies, young soldiers have a gay soldier attached to them, and they accept him totally. They meet a Jewish doctor, and they decide that this Jewish doctor would make an excellent match for their gay friend.
They come from a matchmaking tradition 5,000 years old, and it's not brought out openly in the movie a lot, but the chief matchmaker is Nimrod, the "dunce" of the group.
His job is difficult because Yossi and Tom (the young man) are real "Fixer-uppers" and Tom must be pointed to one single man, and Yossi's demons must be tamed. This is the job of the matchmaker. It happens offscreen but Nimrod convinces Yossi that Lior has been dead for a decade, and is not coming back. But here is Tom, who is a fine man and would make an excellent match for him, and he is an excellent match for Tom.
The last three words of the movie are the dialogue that indicates that both Tom and Yossi accept this match. Since for about a decade, the governments of Israel and the US have allowed their gay men to be partnered with each other in the US (and I speak from experience) but the INS watches these matches even more closely than straight matches to see that they're not frauds, I'll include the words here that Yossi and Tom say to each other, since you might need them someday yourself:

Tom: le-tamid?
Yossi: Keyn! le-tamid!

(For always? Yes! For Always!)

The tragedy of "Yossi & Jagger" is that the gorgeous one died. The real mystery is how the dullard troll Yossi ever landed him in the first place. Now, ten years of mourning later, Yossi, all puffy and bloated, gets another hottie soldier in the sack. Are we really supposed to believe this hooey?
