It is an unfortunate fact that a collection of essays such as these is considered to be ‘groundbreaking’. Let’s instead assume that the breadth of discussion – including sexual identity, self-esteem and self-worth, female commoditization, negativity and contradiction in the media, double standards and surviving assault – is what makes this collection vital. The heart of many essays extols information and education, but especially COMMUNICATION (imagine that) within relationships. We experience direct and indirect sexual education in the formative years, and this forms the basis for our opinions and thoughts about sex, as well as our relationships throughout life. Sexual education is of course bound up with socialization, and for girls, it’s here early on in life that shame and negativity are imparted in place of openness and fact. Yes Means Yes simply proposes a necessary shift in attitude for everyone, male and female.
