A travel guide to the Africa that folks on safari never see. His thesis, at the end of the book, is that many countries in Africa have a lot of natural resources but avaricious rulers force most of the people to live in abject poverty. He also believes that helpful NGOs and foreign aid are not the answer.

A bittersweet memoir of travels in west Africa by one of America's preeminent writers.
Alas, this may be Theroux's final African sojourn. From visions of the lap of luxurious "adventure travel" to vignettes of desperate, hopeless and malicious poverty, both urban and rural, Theroux, as usual, pulls no punches.

Theroux's journey began in the richness of a five-star hotel in Capetown and ended in the squalor of Luanda. North of Windhoek he began asking himself "What am I doing here?" An adventure travel writer who has shared trips with his readers, but now a grandfather who is aware of his vulnerability as a white man with money, alone, in a society where corruption , dishonesty, and violence are normal. With fly-covered chicken for meals, bushmen re-enacting the desert experience, and endless filthy towns, he accepts that this will be his last African trip. The question's answer? Preparing to leave.
