Add a CommentFantastic movie! Watched with my kids, better than I remembered. Hilarious comedy, and a lovely ending. A classic. Steve Martin and John Candy are gold! How they could keep a straight face, I'll never know!
John Candy was a gem.
This is a heartfelt and touching film masquerading as a comedy. Don't get me wrong- planes, trains and automobiles is a road trip comedy but the heartstrings get pulled more often than you'd think. Planes, Trains, and Automobiles is one of those rare movies that manages to mingle outrageous comedy and light drama in such a way that we aren't repulsed or offended by its simplicity and occasional mawkishness. It's a fine cinematic treat that doesn't demand much from a viewer, but gives back a lot, both in terms of laughter and good feeling and a lot of this has to do with the casting. Both Steve Martin and especially John Candy are very good and bring their characters to life. The ending will get you and it's a compliment to the director- the great John Hughes and the screenplay. If you are in a mood for a funny yet melodramatic excursion than this is the film that will get you in the mood
one of the most funniest movies of all time. steve martin and john candy are the greatest comedy team of it's time it aged very badly now but back then it was a great movie.
OK 1987 movie - surprising (to me) it didn't hit my, um, funny bone.
Think movie as Hallmark's crazy politically incorrect uncle as it cheerfully subvert holiday movie formula.
Steve Martin & John Candy in a love-hate relationship
The official movie of Thanksgiving, it's time to watch it again. Martin wants to fly cross-country to join his family on Thanksgiving, but runs into complications, and one of them is a big loudmouth John Candy. Veers back and forth between bittersweet comedy and straight up slapstick. Martin is mostly the straight man to Candy's top banana. Unfortunately, the music is awful. Rated R, and if you have an aversion to vulgar diction, I suggest you leave the room during the scene at the rental car counter.
Need to buy more copies. It is My tradition To watch on Thanksgiving.
5/5
What hasn't been said about this film? Best Thanksgiving movie ever? Check. Best Road Trip movie ever? Probably. 2 of the funniest actors to grace the silver screen? Check.
The writing is a little bit dated, but the deliveries make this one not to miss! Maybe not Steve Martin's best film, but who cares?! Go see it!
I first saw this eons ago and it remains one of my favourites :-)
