Justine Nolan is a documentary filmmaker who lost her grandmother - the only person who had ever been a source of love and comfort in her life - a decade ago. Her own mother, Deborah, had always been distant and uninvolved, following her own agenda in pursuit of her career as an interior designer.

When Justine accidentally opens a letter addressed to her mother one day, she's shocked. She discovers that her grandmother Gabri is, in fact, very much alive - and that her own mother deliberately estranged the family from her for all these years.

Justine begins a search for her grandmother that takes her to Istanbul, where she begins to uncover family secrets that stretch as far back as World War II. And as she peels the layers of deception away, she begins to understand a woman she never really knew.

This was a hard one to put down but a fast read. PG for mild sex. No bad language or gore.

Had to read for book club. 100 of the 400 pages were interesting; the story within a story, about WWII. Otherwise, pretty much a waste of time.

I had a tough time reading this book. Just wanted to get through it so I could find out what happened. But I found some of the parts quite unrealistic. I woudn't recommend it to others

Very disappointing book. I kept thinking I was reading Danielle Steel, the writing was so juvenile.

I am a big fan of this author, and I've read every one of her books. This was not only the best book of hers that I've ever read, it might just be the my favorite novel ever. The story line really touched me, and the details of her grandmother's life were so sad. I can't imagine a mother like the one the twins had to put up with either. Highly recommended!
