Davis is ace reporter Gale Gayley, who literally falls into the story of a lifetime when she's a passenger on an airplane that crashes into a Chicago bridge. In the smoke and darkness, she's saved by a rude, foul-mouthed "hero", who promptly disappears into the night ... leaving only his shoe behind.

Brilliant, Preston Sturges style satire on the superficiality of hero worship. Dustin Hoffman plays a self-pitying loser: a petty thief, compulsive liar and neglectful Dad, who, almost against his will rescues a plane-ful of trapped airline passengers. Andy Garcia is the soft spoken, telegenically handsome drifter who gets the credit. As Garcia becomes an inspirational media darling, while Hoffman schemes to get a financial reward, our simplistic notions of what makes a hero are upended. A fine reminder that ordinary, even venal people can be capable of greatness.

Not slapstick (well, I suppose a bit of that), but definitely funny. Also has several points to make about heroism, personality, the situations we can cope with, and the ones we can't. Hoffman, as always, nails his part, with no covering or explaining, yet showing the guy who can *only* operate in a crisis.
