Secret Heroes is a remarkable compendium by Paul Martin, former Executive Editor of National Geographic Traveler, that illuminates the lives of thirty forgotten American heroes. Gathering together remarkable stories about unknown champions, explorers, inventors, and innovators who never made the pages of American history textbooks--not George Washington, but the tailor who saved his life...twice; the first African-American combat pilot; the 62-year-old female muckraking journalist who refused to turn her back on injustice--Secret Heroes is just the sort of fascinating and fun popular history that readers love, not unlike Kenneth C. Davis's bestselling Don't Know Much About#65533; series and Rick Beyer's The Greatest Stories Never Told.

People have odd notions of heroes? Possibly from watching too much TV, and confusing heroism with commercial advertisements? Paul Sharaga, the heroic policeman who was first on the scene after the assassination of Sen. Bobby Kennedy, filled out an honest - - the only honest - - police report, which he refused to change or alter, under great pressure ahd harrassment from the police management at Ramparts/LA! Within the year, Mr. Sharaga would be forced out of the LAPD. A real American hero. Julie Sirrs, the DIA agent would brought back all the information on the Taliban/al Qaeda from the anti-Taliban leader of the Northern Alliance, Ahmad Shah Massoud [who was assassinated by al Qaeda suicide bombrers on 9/09/01], with the prediction of an upcoming terrorist attack on America, was forced out of the DIA. A real American hero. Keysha Cooper, formerly of Washington Mutual - - before they were taken over by Chase - - was fired for refusing to underwrite fraudulent mortgage loans. A real American hero. John Kiriakou, whistleblower of the illegal torture by the CIA, now resides in jail for his efforts. A real American hero. Dr. Cate Jenkins, whistleblower at the EPA, warning the workers at Ground Zero of toxic substances. A real American hero.
