Joanna Trollope's warm, insightful novel stars Eleanor, who, in a chance encounter, invites two young mothers into her home and slowly begins to connect with them and their friends. So begins a Friday night social circle, filled with generosity, warmth and heart. But when one of them meets a man, new issues arise: Can female friendships withstand the jealousies and intricacies of love? Friday Nights opens a window onto six very different women's lives, their passions and their sorrows -- and explores with insight and humanity the shifting currents of friendship.

Men aren't a career, you know. A man isn't your life's work, however much he'd like to be.

His hand fluttered up involuntarily towards his pocket. His eyes were slightly glazed.

grown-ups often appeared to be very certain of how to behave until circumstances actually required them to behave like that, whereupon they seemed to think it was perfectly OK to make new rules, just for them.

A good story about friendship among women. A rather abrupt ending. Did not seem finished off somehow.

Perhaps not quite up to the standard of some of her other books, but that's being kinda nit-picky. Everything she writes is worth reading. In Friday Nights, she describes a group of women who meet for support and friendship, and whose world is turned into turmoil when one of the women meets a man she wants to introduce to their circle. Trouble follows!! But not chick-lit trouble, actual believable trouble.
