This offered much less than I had expected. The art is reproduced in black and white. The annotator, Leslie S. Klinger, eschews literary analysis to instead footnote such minutiae as the etymological origins of characters' names and whether a particular page was preceded or followed in the original comic book by a page of advertisements. The best parts of this volume are when Klinger quotes generously from Gaiman's original scripts, and thereby reveals the author's actual intentions and feelings about the work as it was being created.

A revel in background information, for addicts. For visuals, go for The Absolute Sandman, the same 20 issues in full color.
